Sulfonic acids, petroleum, sodium salts CAS#68608-26-4
Sodium petroleum sulfonate, also known as sodium alkane sulfonate or T702 rust inhibitor, is an anionic surfactant of the sulfonate family. Its general formula is RSO₃Na, in which R stands for an alkyl chain with 14 to 18 carbon atoms. It normally exists as a viscous liquid; its color varies from orange‑yellow to dark black, subject to the source of feedstock. It has a density of 1.09 g/cm³ and dissolves well in water. Featuring reliable emulsifying and rust‑inhibiting functions, it is extensively applied as textile printing and dyeing auxiliary, liquid detergent ingredient, emulsifier for vinyl chloride polymerization, as well as metal rust‑preventive oils and greases.

Product Application of Sodium Petroleum Sulfonate
Sodium petroleum sulfonate is an anionic surfactant manufactured via sulfonation followed by neutralization. It boasts outstanding penetrating power, paired with robust emulsifying, degreasing and cleaning capacity. Its performance remains stable even in environments with strong alkali, high temperature or oxidizing agents. Besides, it features good compatibility with both anionic and non‑ionic surfactants.
Apart from its reliable emulsifying effect, sodium petroleum sulfonate delivers favorable lubrication and rust inhibition. It has low corrosiveness to non‑ferrous metals and causes slight skin irritation. Owing to these merits, it is widely incorporated into metalworking fluids, acting as emulsifier, lubricant and auxiliary anti‑rust additive.
Moreover, it can serve as a stabilizer, detergent, processing aid and dispersant. It covers a wide range of industries such as petroleum recovery, textile printing and dyeing, pharmaceutical production and chemical synthesis.
