Product Details

Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is a powerful oxidizing agent that appears as blackish-purple crystals with a characteristic bluish metallic luster. It has a melting point of 240°C and a density of 2.7 g/cm³. The compound is odorless but may explode when it comes into contact with certain organic materials or readily oxidizable substances.

Potassium permanganate CAS#7722-64-7

Potassium permanganate is soluble in water and alkaline solutions and slightly soluble in methanol, acetone, and sulfuric acid. Due to its strong oxidizing properties, it is widely used as an oxidizing agent in chemical production and related industrial processes.

Potassium permanganate is widely used as an oxidizing agent in chemical production, including in the manufacture of saccharin, vitamin C, isoniazid, and benzoic acid. In the pharmaceutical field, it can be used as a preservative, disinfectant, deodorizing agent, and antidote.

In water purification and wastewater treatment, potassium permanganate serves as a water treatment agent for oxidizing hydrogen sulfide, phenols, iron, manganese, and various organic and inorganic pollutants. It can also help control odors and remove color. In gas purification, it is used to remove trace amounts of sulfur, arsenic, phosphorus, silanes, boranes, and sulfides.

In the mining and metallurgical industries, it is used for separating molybdenum from copper, removing impurities from zinc and cadmium, and serving as an oxidizing agent in compound flotation processes. It can also be used as a bleaching agent for specialty fabrics, waxes, oils, and resins, as an adsorbent in gas masks, and as a coloring agent for wood and copper.

Food-grade potassium permanganate may be used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant, deodorizer, water purification agent, and refining agent for carbon dioxide used in beverages. Owing to its strong oxidizing, deodorizing, and disinfecting properties, it also has applications in the pharmaceutical industry as a preservative, disinfectant, deodorizer, and antidote.
