Product Description

Chromium(VI) oxide (CAS 1333-82-0, CrO₃), commonly called chromium trioxide or chromic acid anhydride, is a dark red to purple-red crystalline solid, highly soluble in water and strongly oxidizing. It is the primary source of Cr(VI) species in chrome plating, metal finishing and industrial oxidation processes, and dissolves in water to form chromic acid.
Key features:
  • Dark red crystalline flakes, highly soluble in water.

  • Strong oxidizer and corrosive, reacts violently with organic matter.

  • Convenient solid source of Cr(VI) for plating and anodizing baths.

  • Decomposes on heating above ~196 °C to Cr₂O₃ and oxygen.

  • High purity grades available for decorative and hard chrome plating.

  • Widely used in organic oxidation and catalyst preparation.

Product Application
Chromium(VI) oxide is a high-value inorganic chromium compound mainly used in electroplating, metal surface treatment and industrial oxidation.
In chrome plating, it is dissolved to prepare decorative chrome and hard chrome plating baths. Decorative chrome gives a bright, corrosion-resistant finish on automotive, hardware and sanitary fittings, while hard chrome provides wear-resistant, low-friction coatings on hydraulic rods, molds and engineering components.
In metal surface treatment, it is used for aluminum anodizing, passivation of zinc and cadmium coatings, chromate conversion coatings on magnesium and aluminum alloys, and etching of printed circuit boards.
In organic synthesis and fine chemicals, it is a strong oxidant for converting alcohols to aldehydes/ketones, and a precursor for preparing chromium-based catalysts and other Cr(VI) compounds.
In other fields, it is used in wood preservation, inks, dyes, and as an oxidizing agent in specialty chemical processes.
