High‑purity zinc oxide is an odorless white powder without mechanical impurities. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents including ethanol and ether. It dissolves in dilute acids to generate zinc salts and reacts with strong alkalis to produce zincates, showing typical amphoteric‑oxide behaviour.
