Pure zinc oxide appears as a white, odorless powder free‑of mechanical impurities. It does not dissolve in water, yet is soluble in organic solvents including ethanol and ether. Being a typical amphoteric oxide, it reacts with dilute acids to generate zinc salts and also reacts with strong alkalis to yield zincates.
