Dimethyl Carbonate CAS#616-38-6 Products Description
Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) appears as a colorless, clear liquid with a distinctive smell under ambient conditions. Its key physical properties include a relative density (D20/4) of 1.0694, melting point at 4 °C, boiling point at 90.3 °C, open cup flash point of 21.7 °C, closed cup flash point of 16.7 °C, and a refractive index (nD20) of 1.3687.
DMC is flammable and has low toxicity. It can mix freely with most organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones and esters, yet only dissolves sparingly in water. Functioning as an efficient methylation reagent, DMC is far less toxic and more readily biodegradable than classic methylating agents like methyl iodide and dimethyl sulfate.
Phosgene dependent synthesis routes are now rarely adopted. The dominant industrial route for DMC production is the catalytic oxidative carbonylation of methanol with oxygen, representing a more eco friendly manufacturing technology.
DMC is suitable for methylating substrates including aniline, phenol and carboxylic acids. Some methylation reactions call for elevated pressure; for the methylation of carboxylic acids with DMC, DBU may be introduced as a catalyst under reflux conditions.

Dimethyl Carbonate CAS#616-38-6 Product Application
Dimethyl carbonate has extensive application as a solvent for organic-synthesis procedures, representing an eco-friendly replacement for solvents including methyl ethyl ketone, tert-butyl acetate and parachlorobenzotrifluoride.
It acts as a vital intermediate for synthesizing diphenyl carbonate, which in turn constitutes an essential feedstock for producing bisphenol-A -based polycarbonate. Moreover, dimethyl carbonate works as a green methylation reagent to implement methylation reactions on aniline, phenols and carboxylic acids.
Thanks to its high oxygen content, DMC is also applicable as a fuel additive. Beyond that, it has gained practical use within supercapacitor and lithium-ion battery sectors.
Owing to its environmentally favorable characteristics, dimethyl carbonate serves as a safer substitute for dimethyl sulfate and methyl halides in methylation transformations. It can also take the place of phosgene for methoxycarbonylation and carbonylation-related reactions.
