Product Description of 4-Oxovaleric Acid CAS No. 123-76-2
Levulinic acid is an organic substance with the molecular formula C5H8O3. It dissolves readily in water and several organic solvents, but is insoluble in gasoline, kerosene, turpentine, and carbon tetrachloride. It remains relatively stable during distillation under normal pressure. However, prolonged heating causes dehydration, resulting in the formation of an unsaturated γ-lactone.

Product Applications of 4-Oxovaleric Acid CAS No. 123-76-2
Levulinic acid has a broad range of industrial applications. It can undergo reactions as either a carboxylic acid or a ketone. Through esterification, halogenation, hydrogenation, oxidative dehydrogenation, condensation, and other processes, it can be used to manufacture various products, including resins, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, solvents, coatings and inks, rubber and plastic additives, lubricant additives, surfactants, and more.
In the pharmaceutical industry, its calcium salt (calcium fructobiate) can be used in the preparation of intravenous injections. As a nutritional agent, it supports bone formation and helps maintain normal nerve and muscle excitability. It is also utilized in the manufacture of indomethacin and plant hormones. Bisphenolic acid derived from levulinic acid can be used to produce water-soluble resins, which are applied in the paper industry for manufacturing filter paper. Additionally, levulinic acid serves as an intermediate in the production of pesticides and dyes.
