Product Description
Dodecyl(2-hydroxy-3-sulphonatopropyl) dimethylammonium, commercially known as Lauryl Hydroxysultaine (LHSB, CAS 13197-76-7), is a high-purity zwitterionic amphoteric surfactant of the sulfobetaine family. Its molecule combines a quaternary ammonium cation with a sulfonate anion, so it carries no net charge across a very wide pH range. This balanced structure is the reason behind its broad formulation compatibility, low irritation and stable performance under hard water.
Compared with cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), LHSB stands out in three ways. First, it builds richer, denser and longer-lasting foam in hard water and in the presence of sebum, clay and oil, because the sulfonate headgroup resists calcium and magnesium interference. Second, it is exceptionally mild to skin and eyes, which is why it is preferred in sensitive-skin and baby-care products. Third, it strongly boosts viscosity and clarity when paired with anionic surfactants such as SLES and LAS, allowing formulators to reduce salt dosage and obtain clearer, smoother gels.
The product is supplied as a light yellow, transparent, aqueous liquid. It dissolves readily in water, is fully compatible with anionic, nonionic, cationic and other amphoteric surfactants, and keeps good thermal and oxidative stability. It is low in free amine, odor and color, and performs reliably in pH 4–9 systems.
