Calcium Ammonium Nitrate CAS#15245‑12‑2
Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) is a nitrogen‑calcium compound fertilizer produced by melting ammonium nitrate with limestone and dolomite powder. It consists mainly of ammonium nitrate, calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, containing 21‑26% nitrogen. It appears as grey‑white or pale‑yellow granules or powder, and its aqueous solution shows weak‑alkaline property.
As one of the most water‑soluble calcium‑based fertilizers worldwide, CAN combines the strengths of premium calcium fertilizer and high‑efficiency nitrogen fertilizer. Its key advantages are listed below:
- It supplies fully water‑soluble calcium that crops can take up directly. It relieves typical calcium‑deficiency symptoms including stunted plants, dead terminal buds, curled young leaves, burnt leaf margins, decayed root tips and fruit necrotic spots. It enhances crop disease resistance and improves produce quality for better economic returns.
- Most nitrogen exists as nitrate‑nitrogen, which dissolves rapidly and is readily absorbed by crops without soil conversion. Higher nitrogen‑use efficiency facilitates crop uptake of potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and manganese, lowering the risk of multiple nutrient‑deficiency disorders.
- Being nearly neutral, CAN helps improve acidic soils with minimal impact on soil pH. It prevents soil hardening and keeps soil loose. It lowers active‑aluminum concentration and reduces phosphorus fixation by aluminum. Its soluble calcium boosts plant disease resistance and activates beneficial soil microbes.
- Granular CAN features low caking tendency and good thermal stability. Compared with many competing nitrate‑based fertilizers, it delivers safer performance for transport, storage and handling.
