Product Description

1,3-Dimercaptopropane (CAS 109-80-8, HSCH₂CH₂CH₂SH), also called 1,3-propanedithiol, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a strong, unpleasant mercaptan odor. It is a bifunctional thiol used as a building block, chelating agent and protective group reagent in organic synthesis, electronics and specialty chemicals.

Key features:

  • Two terminal thiol groups, highly reactive toward alkyl halides, epoxides and aldehydes/ketones.

  • Forms 1,3-dithiane rings with carbonyl compounds — a classic carbonyl protective group.

  • Good chelating ability toward soft metals (Au, Ag, Hg, Pb).

  • Soluble in most organic solvents, slightly soluble in water.

  • High-purity grades available for electronic and pharmaceutical use.

  • Useful as chain transfer agent, crosslinker and sulfur source.

 Product Application
1,3-Dimercaptopropane is a specialty dithiol mainly used as a synthetic intermediate, chelating agent and electronic-grade sulfur reagent.
In organic synthesis, it is the standard reagent for converting aldehydes and ketones into 1,3-dithianes, a widely used carbonyl protective group in multi-step synthesis. It also reacts with alkyl halides and epoxides to build thioether and polythioether structures, and serves as a starting material for thioester and thiocarbamate compounds.
In electronics and materials, it is used as a sulfur source and ligand in the preparation of metal sulfide nanoparticles, quantum dots and thin-film materials, and as a chelator for gold, silver and other noble-metal surface treatment.
In industrial applications, it is used as an epoxy curing accelerator, a chain transfer agent in polymer synthesis, a crosslinker in rubber and adhesives, and a complexing agent in metal-finishing and wastewater treatment.
