Calcium chloride CAS#10043-52-4
Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) is a colorless deliquescent solid that is highly soluble in water and hygroscopic. It can be synthesized by the reaction between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid, or between calcium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. It finds applications in pharmaceutical formulations, antifreeze systems, and as a coagulating agent.
Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) possesses a broad spectrum of practical applications. It acts as a desiccant and highway de‑icing agent for melting ice and snow. It is also applied for dust suppression and thawing construction materials including sand, gravel and concrete. Besides, it is widely adopted across food processing and pharmaceutical sectors, and can function as a fungicide.
No tumorigenic, mutagenic or endocrine‑disrupting effects on human have been identified for calcium chloride. It serves as road salt for snow melting, drying agent for desiccators, dehydrating medium for organic liquids and gases, raw material for refrigeration brines and antifreeze, dust‑proofing additive, food ingredient, as well as concrete hardening accelerator.
Incompatibilities & Hazard Notes Its aqueous solution exhibits weak basic properties. In humid environments, it reacts with zinc metal to generate highly flammable hydrogen gas. Dissolution in water releases substantial heat. It is incompatible with bromine trifluoride and percarboxylic‑2‑furan. Under moist conditions, it may corrode certain metals and building materials.
