Products Description
Propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PGMEA), also known as propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate or 1-methoxy-2-propyl acetate, has the molecular formula C₆H₁₂O₃. It is a colorless, hygroscopic liquid with a characteristic odor and is widely regarded as a versatile industrial solvent. Its molecular structure contains both ether and ester functional groups, incorporating polar and non-polar components that contribute to its excellent solvency and coupling properties. Consequently, PGMEA can dissolve a broad range of polar and non-polar substances, making it suitable for use in solvent-based coatings, screen-printing inks, paints, textile dyes, textile processing agents, and cleaning applications, including LCD manufacturing. It is a flammable liquid that may form explosive vapor–air mixtures at temperatures above its flash point of approximately 42°C.
PGMEA is commonly used as a high-performance solvent in industrial formulations because of its balanced polarity and effective dissolving capacity. It can be synthesized through the esterification of propylene glycol methyl ether with acetic acid in the presence of a solid acid catalyst. The resulting crude product is subsequently purified by distillation to obtain high-purity PGMEA.
