Products Description

Sodium sulfide is an inorganic chemical compound with the molecular formula Na₂S, commonly available in its hydrated form as sodium sulfide nonahydrate (Na₂S·9H₂O). Both the anhydrous and hydrated forms are colorless, water-soluble salts that produce strongly alkaline solutions when dissolved in water. Upon exposure to moist air, sodium sulfide and its hydrates can release hydrogen sulfide gas, which is characterized by its distinctive rotten-egg odor. Anhydrous sodium sulfide typically appears as a yellow to brick-red crystalline mass or fused solid. When exposed to humid air, it readily absorbs moisture and may undergo spontaneous heating, potentially creating a fire hazard if combustible materials are nearby. Commercial-grade sodium sulfide often exhibits pink, reddish-brown, or yellowish-brown coloration due to the presence of impurities.

Product Applications

Sodium sulfide (Na₂S) has a wide range of industrial and research applications. In biomedical research, it is used as a hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) donor to investigate the potential effects of hydrogen sulfide therapy, including its role in preventing diabetes and related complications in animal models.

In the metallurgical industry, sodium sulfide is used in the processing and treatment of metal ores, including gold, lead, and copper ores. It is also employed in the dye industry, particularly in the manufacture and application of sulfur dyes.

Other important applications include its use as a reducing agent, mordant, flotation agent, and depilatory agent in leather processing. In the paper industry, it serves as a processing aid during pulp digestion and paper manufacturing. Additionally, sodium sulfide is utilized in textile, pigment, and rubber production, as well as in certain agricultural applications, such as sheep-dip formulations.
