Products Description

Ethylene glycol diacetate (EGDA) is an organic ester compound consisting of an ethylene glycol (1,2-ethanediol) backbone, with both hydroxyl groups esterified by acetate groups (-O-C(=O)-CH₃).

It is generally a colorless, transparent liquid, although it may occasionally exhibit a slightly yellowish appearance. It has a characteristic ester-like odor and the following physical properties: a density of approximately 1.1043 g/mL at 20°C, a melting point of -41°C, a boiling point ranging from 185°C to 190°C, a refractive index of 1.4162 at 20°C, and an open-cup flash point of approximately 96°C.

Ethylene glycol diacetate exhibits typical ester chemical properties and can undergo hydrolysis in the presence of strong alkalis or inorganic acids, producing ethylene glycol and acetic acid. For example, when it reacts with sodium hydroxide solution, its ester bonds are cleaved, resulting in the formation of ethylene glycol and the corresponding acetate salt. Additionally, it can undergo alcoholysis reactions and act as an acetate donor in certain organic synthesis processes.

Product Applications

Ethylene glycol diacetate (EGDA) is widely used as an organic solvent for oils, cellulose esters, and various other chemical substances. It provides excellent flow and leveling properties in baking varnishes and enamels, particularly in formulations containing thermoplastic acrylic resins. In addition, EGDA exhibits good solvent properties for cellulosic coatings and is suitable for use in certain printing ink formulations, including screen-printing inks. It has also been applied as a fragrance fixative and has potential uses in water-based adhesive formulations.

Furthermore, ethylene glycol diacetate can serve as an acyl donor in the in situ generation of peracetic acid during the chemoenzymatic synthesis of caprolactone. It can also be utilized as a precursor in the enzymatic synthesis of poly(ethylene glutarate), making it useful in certain biochemical and polymer synthesis processes.
